Music Series with Dr. Ramona Luengen: Statbat Mater
March 20, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
The Last Installment of the Tuesday Nights Adult Study Group with Dr. Ramona Luengen
The Stabat Mater is a 13th century text which portrays the suffering of Jesus Christ’s mother during his crucifixion. A description of Mary’s suffering, it is unique amidst the Christ-focussed texts and music of Lent. Well known as a hymn (VU 139 At the Cross Her Vigil Keeping), it has also been a source of inspiration for larger, remarkably powerful works by composers throughout the ages. We will explore the original plainchant melody as well as Stabat Mater settings by Scarlatti, Pergolesi, Dvorak, MacMillan, Mealor and perhaps even Luengen.
