WHAT TO DO TO CONFRONT THE CLIMATE EMERGENCY: A Talk with author SETH KLEIN
April 8, 2021 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
We will be hosting Seth Klein, a public policy researcher and writer based in Vancouver, BC, author of “A Good War: Mobilizing Canada for the Climate Emergency”. The zoom link will be available at 7:15pm. To request a zoom link call 604-261-6377 or send an email to admin@shuc.ca
It’s time for an all-hands-on-deck response to the climate emergency for all institutions and for all of us as individuals. As in the Second World War, everyone has to do their bit.
Seth is clear that you do not have to have read his book to make attendance at this presentation/discussion worthwhile but recommends a read if you can. Read more about Seth’s work at his website https://www.sethklein.ca/
Climate change is an existential threat. Goals are not being met, and many young people are moving from eco-anxiety to eco-despair because of this existential threat. Seth Klein shows that youth leadership is key. As in the Second World War, youth have the least to say, yet the highest price to pay. Seth points to “a charged moment of intergenerational reckoning” here in Vancouver. Key takeaways to guide us today as we confront the climate emergency include lowering the voting age and establishing a Youth Climate Corps, open to all high school grads who wish to enlist.
Seth Klein was the founding British Columbia director of the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives for over two decades and has been immersed in climate change and inequality issues for his working life. He is currently an adjunct professor in urban studies at Simon Fraser University and remains a research associate with CCPA. He lives in Vancouver, B.C.
